There are thousands of songs that are either about a bird, use the imagery of birds, have the name of a bird in the title etc. In fact, with the exception of maybe "Love", there are probably more "bird" songs than any other type of song. On today's episode we will be listening to songs about ducks, chickens, turkeys, eagles and even a jailbird.

he Gestures were an early rock band from Mankato, Minnesota and their first single “Run, Run, Run” is today’s song of the week. Several bands from the 1960s had songs titled ‘Run Run Run’ (with and without commas) including The Who, The Velvet Underground and The Third Rail, but The Gestures were first; though none of them had much in common outside of their names. The song made it to 44 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December of 1964, and the band made an appearance on American Bandstand and toured across the Midwest and Canada in 1965. But due to lack of distribution and some confusion over which song was supposed to be the A Side of their next single, it wasn’t long before the band broke up.

The only thing that we know about “Peanut Duck” is that it was recorded in Philadelphia in 1965. But it’s unknown, or at the very least unclear, who actually played on and sang the song. Supposedly, it was recorded during a drunken late night session and then shelved with no intention of it ever being released. The recording survived only as an acetate, which was eventually discovered in the ‘80s by a British DJ who took it back to England, and released is as a bootleg on Joker Records. Not wanting his rival DJs to infringe upon his precious find, he christened the unknown singer Marsha Gee (who incidentally had a single out on Uptown Records in 1965). This 2005 re-issue (gifted to AP credits Bobby Scott and Forest Hairston for the composition, but it’s still unknown who provided the vocals.
